UNI Panther Men Fall to SMU in NIT, 73-63

The UNI men’s basketball team fought hard against the SMU Mustangs on Wednesday night as the Panthers’ 2024-25 season came to a close in the opening round of the National Invitation Tournament inside Moody Coliseum in Dallas in a 73-63 loss.

Facing off against the top-seed in the 32-team tournament, Northern Iowa sank eight three-point baskets, including four from Trey Campbell while shooting 40% from the floor in the program’s third all-time tournament appearance and first since 2022. The Panthers used a strong second half run to open up a six-point lead out of the break, but was unable to match SMU’s size and rebounding ability.  Campbell led the Panthers in scoring with 16 points, Tytan Anderson added 14, Jacob Hutson had 9 and Cael Schmitt finished with 8 points.  The Panthers finish the season with a 20-13 overall mark.
